One of my values is equality: I fight for my rights and your rights. Together we need to fight for the rights of those who cannot fight for themselves. I am a strong advocate for equal treatment of women, minorities, members of the LGBTQ community, and faith communities.
We need to protect these populations. Over 113,000 hate crimes have been reported in the US since 1991. Of those, 55% were motivated by racial bias, 17% by religious bias, 14% sexual orientation bias, 14% ethnicity bias, and 1% disability bias. Furthermore, the Southern Poverty Law Center reported that the number of hate groups has proliferated in 2017. Regarding domestic violence, three towns in Warren County have some of the highest rates in NJ.
Equality is a personal issue for me. When I read the ADL report that 69 bomb threats were received by Jewish Community Centers in late January, I thought of my son-in-law who is a Rabbi at a JCC. When I read about the white supremacist James Harris Jackson who killed a black man to deter white women from interracial relationships, I thought of my daughter who is married to a Ghanaian man. When I read that women in NJ earn 82 cents for every dollar a man earns for equal work, I thought of my four daughters who are currently working to support themselves and their families.
Now look at some of the key actions the Assemblymen representing our district have taken:
- Proposed a constitutional amendment to provide that only the union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as marriage.
- Voted against funding for Planned Parenthood for 8 years, causing STDs to go up 135% in Warren County and breast cancer to go up 25%
- Voted against prohibiting harmful sexual orientation conversion therapy for minors.
I believe that we protect our own rights when we protect the rights of others. I will support legislation to protect gay marriage and ensure equal pay for equal work, including preventing employers from asking job applicants for their salary history. I will protect our citizens with decisions based on facts and data, including full funding for Planned Parenthood, prohibiting child marriage, and prohibiting harmful conversion therapy.
